Working principle
When the air is compressed, it absorbs energy. The energy is equal to the heat, so the air temperature increases as the pressure increases. Heat will dissipate over time, but for the engine, immediate air consumption is required. Therefore, the intercooler is designed to rapidly cool the air using cold water. When the two media pass each other in the charge air cooler, heat (energy) is exchanged from hot air to cold water. Cold water passes through multiple conduits within the unit. The tubes typically have fins attached to them that have the effect of extending the outer surface area of the tube. In this way, more of the outer surface of the tube is in contact with the hot air. Thermal energy enters the fins from the air, passes through the tube wall and enters the water.
